College graduates across the country are stepping up to the podium to receive their diplomas this month, but many are also walking off that stage thousands of dollars in debt. The average American college student will graduate owing around $28,000 – but the picture looks different in Utah.
Alexis Wilson, 23, graduated in May 2017 at the University of Utah owing nothing. She now has a full-time job with the state's Division of Air Quality. With her paycheck and benefits, she's able to cover her expenses, and for the first time in her life, she has disposable income. She's even thinking about following her parents' advice and making some early financial investments.
