Researchers are dispelling the long-held belief that early, tool-bearing humans caused the extinction of the giant mammals in Africa over the last several million years and are arguing that it was a long-term change to their environment.

According to a study published Thursday in the journal Science, the expansion of grasslands likely led to falling atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which contributed to the animals' demise.
