With a jury in place, opening statements were scheduled Tuesday in the trial of a former Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed an unarmed woman after she called 911 to report a possible rape in the alley behind her home.
Mohamed Noor, 33, who is Somali American, is charged with murder and manslaughter in the July 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a 40-year-old dual Australian-American citizen who was shot when she approached his squad car.

“Desperate Housewives” star Felicity Huffman and a dozen other prominent parents have agreed to plead guilty in the college admissions bribery scam that ensnared wealthy families and athletic coaches at some of the nation’s most selective universities, federal authorities said Monday.
The actress and the other parents were charged last month in the scheme, which authorities say involved rigging standardized test scores and bribing coaches at such prestigious schools as Yale and Georgetown.

Texas is set to welcome a burst of butterflies this summer when 300 million monarchs take to the skies. It’s a dramatic uptick in numbers from last year but scientists warn that the monarch, whose numbers have been dwindling in recent years, is not out of danger yet.
After several years of declining monarch numbers, the population appears to have swelled by as much as 144% according to Craig Wilson, director of the USDA Future Scientists Program and Texas A&M research associate. “Figures show the highest number of hectares covered since at least 2006,” Wilson told Texas A&M Today. “That’s a really positive sign, especially since their numbers have been down in recent years.”

Even a brisk, short walk of less than 10 minutes a day is enough to keep older adults on their feet, reducing the risk of becoming disabled by 85 per cent.

Being active is liable to make you hungrier, so there's a risk you end up eating extra to compensate, and putting on more weight than if you'd never got off the sofa in the first place.

In the not too distant future, you could walk into the international terminal of almost any US airport and board a plane without showing anyone your passport.
At the check-in counter, you'd pose in front of a camera that scans your face and sends your image to a remote system that matches it to a stored copy of your passport photo. You'd have your photo taken again at the security line, and again at the gate. If everything still matched up, you'd be on board, quietly warring with your seat mate over the armrest.
