You don’t normally think of the desert as having a proper “winter,” but parts of Arizona and New Mexico got more than a light dusting of snow to start the year. The result is sprawling desert vistas glazed in white, and it’s downright lovely.

Snow isn’t entirely out of the ordinary for states like Arizona and New Mexico at this time of year, but it’s certainly not something that happens regularly, and locals wasted no time capturing the surreal sights to share on Twitter and elsewhere.

Although voice assistants like Google Assistant have become an increasingly common feature on headphones, typically they aren’t able to listen out for a wake word like they would on a home smart speaker.

Career Development in the Outdoor Industry

For people that are passionate about the outdoors, working in the outdoor industry can seem like a dream come true. However, many of the employment opportunities are highly seasonal, fast-paced work that requires a diverse and ever-changing set of skills. Creating a development roadmap to move your career forward in this industry can seem challenging, but the reward of connecting people to the outdoors is worth it.

In this session, Jacqueline Harp, Store Manager at REI Chattanooga, will share advice and guidance to those who currently work in the outdoor industry, as well as those who aspire to, on how to develop and market scalable skill sets for the outdoor industry.

New Jersey isn’t trailblazing when it comes to legalizing adult-use cannabis, and that could end up being a blessing for the state.

While Gov. Phil Murphy didn’t carry out his previously stated plans to legalize by the end of 2018, the Legislature is close to passing a comprehensive bill that would permit adult cannabis use and strictly regulate its commercial production and sale.

A German labor union is calling on security staff at Berlin's two airports to stage a strike Monday amid ongoing pay negotiations.

The ver.di union said Saturday it's urging workers to join a four-hour walkout starting at 5 a.m. (0400 GMT) that is likely to cause disruptions for airline passengers.

The vast majority of gains in female and minority representation came from Democrats, who nabbed 41 new seats in the House of Representatives and seized back control of the chamber.

A record number of women will serve in the new legislature. Many of those women broke barriers to get to Congress: Muslim women will serve for the first time as will Native American women. Texas sent its first Latina representatives to Congress, and Tennessee elected its first female senator.

Israel's Holocaust survivors tend to live longer, on average, than Israelis who were not exposed to the genocide, despite being in poorer health overall, according to new research published today by JAMA.

Survivors of the Holocaust have higher rates of several chronic health conditions than the general population in Israel, but live an average of seven years longer, the study found. Researchers say survivors' longevity may be owed to a genetic predisposition that helped keep them alive during the Holocaust, as well as a resiliency they gained as a result of the trauma.

Jazmine Barnes was shot dead while in her family's car near Houston last month.

Eric Black Jr, 20, has admitted involvement in the shooting and been charged with murder, Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
