French authorities said a Polish man died in a Strasbourg hospital Sunday, one of a dozen people wounded in last Tuesday’s attack. Poland’s Foreign Ministry extended condolences Sunday on Twitter to his family.

The White House on Sunday pushed the federal government closer to the brink of a partial shutdown later this week, digging in on its demand for $5 billion to build a border wall as congressional Democrats stood firm against it.
“We will do whatever is necessary to build the border wall to stop this ongoing crisis of immigration,” said White House senior adviser Stephen Miller.

Surgeons make a small keyhole incision in the neck to place the device, called a Strentrode, which is just 4mm in diameter and is made from a strong but flexible alloy called nitinol.
In 2016 the team, including researchers from the University of Melbourne, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Synchron Australia, demonstrated that the Stentrode can record neural signals in the brain.

Surveying the whole scope of human history vis-à-vis food, a couple of themes emerge. One is that humans like their food to taste good. Another is that they like it to not kill them. These two qualities often cohere in the same foodstuff—apples, for instance, taste great, and are not to my knowledge toxic—but inevitably the tastes-good/won’t-kill-you ratio’s sometimes less than ideal. For some foods, this is a selling point—fugu, say, the poisonous fish you need a certificate to properly prepare.
For others, lethality’s just an unfortunate byproduct—as with the alloy in early tin cans, which sometimes gave people lead poisoning.

Viva Republica, operator of the South Korean digital wallet Toss, has raised $80 million from investors including Kleiner Perkins to propel its expansion into new areas such as online stock trading.
Launched as a peer-to-peer payment app in 2015 by former Samsung Group dentist Lee Seung-gun, Toss expanded into a plethora of financial services from credit scoring to insurance and now wants to become a securities broker. Its latest round of funding also involved Ribbit Capital and valued the company at $1.2 billion, the Seoul-based start-up said in a statement.
